SERDANG: The three men suspected of robbing six business outlets in Puchong in an hour-long robbery spree on June 16 admitted to getting the idea from watching Tamil movies.
They also admitted to being involved in at least 20 cases of robbery.
Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said following their arrest on Friday, two admitted to committing recent robberies in Klang, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Puchong.
“These youths in their early 20s are school dropouts and turned to a life of crime after getting the idea from watching Tamil movies,” he said, adding that police have identified the remaining three suspects and urged them to surrender.
Khalid, however, expressed dismay at the perception that police were solely to blame for the increase in crimes committed in Puchong.
“One of the reasons the number of crimes being reported in Puchong is on the rise is because there is someone there who always defends suspects or criminals arrested by the police, thus hampering police investigations. More often than not, the case is blown out of proportion and highlighted in the media before the police can complete their investigations.”
Without revealing the person’s identity, Khalid questioned what the person had done to prevent youngsters from committing crimes.
“The police can’t do everything. We need the help of elected representatives and NGOs to help identify school dropouts and juvenile delinquents in their area and organise activities or dialogues with them.
“Steps like this can go a long way in preventing youths from turning to a life of crime,” he said.
Khalid added that the police were still looking at the CCTV recordings at a petrol station in Serdang Jaya where a bid to cart away an ATM on Saturday was foiled.
