GEORGE TOWN: A mentally-ill man flew into a rage for no apparent reason, hitting his 80-year-old father repeatedly with a bottle, killing him instantly at their apartment in Taman Tun Sardon.

The 35-year-old unemployed man, who had been clinically diagnosed as mentally ill, attacked his father who was sitting alone in the living room around 3.30pm Friday.

Neighbours who heard a commotion alerted the police who, upon arriving, found the father Sk. Madar Sk. Kasim sprawled in a pool of blood.

He was already lifeless.

Police then found the suspect sitting motionless in the living room. A shattered bottle believed to have been used by the suspect was also recovered.

The two men had been the only ones at home. The suspect’s mother Che Siah Hashim, 65, was away helping at a friend’s wedding. The three of them were the only occupants in the unit.

The sister Hariati, 47, said her brother was diagnosed with mental illness when he was in his 20s.

She said the suspect, the youngest among five siblings, was admitted to the Penang Hospital’s psychiatric ward in Perak Road thrice since his illness developed.

“However, he was discharged each time after his condition was reported to be stable,” she said at the scene.

Hariati acknowledged that the suspect had previously beaten up her parents on several occasions.

“Recently, he slashed my mother with a parang. Luckily, she was only hit by the back of the parang.’’

She said that the suspect had refused to take medications for his illness.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid, who confirmed the case, said the suspect had apparently confessed to killing his own father when questioned by the police.

“He claimed he felt dizzy before he commited the crime. There had been no arguments before the suspect suddenly reacted violently,” said ACP Azam.
